[This piece has been featured in IAO: Ophite Iconography, p.145.]

The Archons, a list of planetary rulers, often seven, was a tradition shared with hermeticism (see the Pimander), which in Gnosticism took a distinctive turn, as they became identified with monstrous animal headed figures. This aspect may have constituted uniquely Gnostic iconography, which was in turn largely borrowed from Egyptian art. In IAO I chose to illustrate the Ophite system, where the names of the Archons are the following:

Michael (lion), Suriel (bull), Raphael (frog or dragon), Gabriel (eagle), Taltabaot (bear), Erataot (dog), Onoel (donkey).

In this piece I also chose to emphasize their Egyptian correspondences, with Horus for the hawk and the Apis bull, Hermes/Mercury with his Alexandrian dog-headed appearance and lastly, Michael, the lion headed, with the corresponding monstrous figure from the Mithraic mysteries, as “lion” was also an initiation grade in the mysteries of Mithras, to which many gems have been ascribed.
