The Prophet and the Angel

[The piece has been featured as the dustjacket of the novel Abyssinia by Damian Murphy, 2017.]

A synthesis of mystical patterns as angelic revelation, the peacock angel and the Heavenly City. The angel is Uriel, said to be the guardian of Eden since the fall of man, and the one to cast the rebel Angels out of heaven (although these roles and the fiery sword are also attributed to Michael, depending on the tradition), thus Lucifer is depicted as falling with his head as the morning star. The sigil corresponds to that of Uriel in the Grimoire of Armadel, following the edition by McGregor Mathers. The prophet in question is Esdras, who received his revelation by Uriel in Esdras II (for a critical edition and history of this text see: Alastair Hamilton. The Reception of the Second Book of Esdras (4 Ezra) from the Renaissance to the Enlightenment. Oxford-Warburg Studies, 1999.)

The shape of the star fortress, a topic that fascinated Robert Fludd, is inspired by the golden talisman used by Dee and Kelley for their angelic conversations. Thus, the pterigoma shaped inscription emulates the shape of the tetraktys but constructed by the name IAD (Enochian for God, with an alternate omega inside, so that it can also be read as IAO, IA, Iabas, Iapos, names given in the invocation of the Headless daimon).
