The Robe of Christ in the Pistis Sophia
[This piece has been featured in IAO: Ophite Iconography, p.156.]
The robe is used as an allegory for the body, in an interesting symbolic interplay. For the Gnostic traditions that denied the physical reality of Christ altogether, he had been a manifestation of light, and therefore, all that had been perceived by the apostles was his robe. In the Pistis Sophia, the robe is described as having on it five mysterious words “that pertained to the height”, here inscribed on a translucent fabric that merges with the body, and that this same Gospel explains as: “The mystery which is beyond the world, that whereby all things exist: It is all evolution and all involution; it projected all emanations and all things therein. Because of it all mysteries exist and all their regions.”
Pistis Sophia: A Gnostic Gospel, London: The Theosophical Publishing Society, 1896, pp.15-16.
King translates these five words as “the robe, the glorious robe of my strength” and after this the secret names of the planets are imparted to the apostles, implying that it was part of a system of ascension.
King, C.W. The Gnostics and their Remains. London: Nutt, 1887, p.309.
The body of light stands between the faces to signify the twelve Aeons, implying that the ascension has been completed.
